Emergency crews responded to a 911 call for a fire at 150 N Hawthorne Street at 1:20 p.m., detectives said. Firefighters from the North Massapequa Fire Department extinguished the blaze and pulled a 64-year-old woman from the home.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, police said.
Initially reported missing, the family's cat, Max, was later found dead underneath a bed, according to animal rescuer John Debacker.
The Homicide Squad, Arson/Bomb Squad, and the Fire Marshal were called to investigate. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
The investigation remains ongoing.
